  1. Is there any point to take career seriously if biz is WAY more important? I currently work as copywriter (100% performance) on the side for my mentor’s marketing agency, and I see all these biz owners who “made it” by taking an easy job so that they could work on biz WHILE on the job. A performance based biz career seems to take way too much energy that could otherwise be put into biz. Like, I understand taking a sales/tech job for a 1-2 years to build skills at the beginning, but going full entrepreneur (or working on biz DURING career hours) seems to be the optimal way.

Career feels like a prison jesus, what’s the point if you can simply replace it by a service based biz? Then use money from service based biz into product based biz. Like u said in a recent tweet, career should be treated as a side business at best lol.

    1. Pretty much no. Just do the minimum for max results. The big joke is that a top performer can work 1/10th the hours and still be at the top. It’s more about corporate politics and being efficient. If you hate your career it means you’re working too hard or not smart enough.

You’re hard working or you’re smart, you can’t be both.

  2. I am a 26 year old woman who doesn’t want kids but maybe marriage. However, statistically the benefits doesn’t look in my favor (generally shorter lifespan, less happiness, etc.). I make six figures but know I need to find other streams of income if I want to hit $1M before 30. I’m attractive (would say solid 7 but almost 8 if I deck out) but am extremely selective about men, who at around my age tend to be mediocre though I live in Silicon Valley. I look for ambition and drive for success, but most people are content with a nice paycheck and netflix.

Knowing the world has chips stacked against me, should I give up on dating and just put all my time into networking with powerful people and building a business or three?

      1. Responding to original poster:

You should know that the majority of ambitious men with a ‘drive for success’ deep down don’t care too much about how much you make and your career status. Your looks, femininity and ability to have and care for children will matter a lot more to them – although its not PC to admit.

Also you are on the nearing the end of your “peak” in terms of beauty which will gradually decline between 29-35 (depending on genetics and how well you take care of yourself). IMO, your best chance for happiness would be to find a successful man 3-7 years older than you (mean peak in their 30’s), have at least 1 child so you have no cat/wine-lady regrets down once you’re in your late 40’s and 50s – ignore the propaganda from all the other miserable childless wine aunts. You will still have time to stack cash in your 30’s and onwards.

It might sound harsh – but I am writing this benevolently although I don’t think you’ll care for this advice.

    1. Do what men do. Have men for friendship, fun and sex. But don’t marry them if it just means you’ll be dragged down. Marry a good partner.

Asking if you should give up just sounds like you are depressed. Ask yourself why you have this all or nothing type of thinking. You don’t have to find a husband or be totally alone. There are other options. Personally, I view women as I do anyone else. If they are fun and nice they can be in my life. No room for people who are jerks, or who sit around doing nothing. Good luck.

  3. What do you guys think of working for a digital marketing agency for a couple of years to learn skills like social media advertising and then building your side business with these skills? Or getting a job as a direct response copywriter (which is sales) and using this skill to build long form sales letters to sell products on the side?

I’m working in recruitment/headhunting and absolutely hate it. So I’m thinking about changing to something else.

  4. #1 You have suggested that the best time to go to a HF is after a recession since you pretty much have a multi year bull run ahead of you. I am currently at top ranked institution and team (sell-side) which arguably is a safer job compared to HF analyst. Is it worth the risk to try and jump to HF? Long term ambition is biz not becoming a PM.

#2 Affiliates… you’ve recommended copying offers/funnels that work (by pretending to be the customer). Guessing that eventually you want to try something new instead of being a copycat, how would you go about it? New spin for an affiliate product / search for less accessible offers/networks?

#3 Any tips for retaining info from non-fiction books you’ve read? I’ve nearly forgotten 90% of the info from books read last year (non-fiction). Thinking about repetition/reading to solve a specific problem/doing small summaries?

Recommendation: gazpacho as an alternative for juicing.
    Many thanks

    1. 1) yes jump as sell side is dead.
      2) this doesn’t make any sense. Everyone starts by emulating the best, like learning fundamentals for a sport. Then you find what you’re good at and add that in to make it different.
      3) No we really stopped reading for a couple years (its down a lot) as we haven’t had big issues to learn for a while

  5. 1) There are quite a few resources online to learn affiliate marketing. But wondering if you know of a good online course / MOOC that offers a complete and good quality course to learn affiliate marketing done the right away. Looking for an honest opinion and preferably not an affiliate link..ha ha 🙂

    2) You had mentioned SP500 was at value in the 2100-2200 range. Why did you buy until ~2600 if that was the case. Just trying to understand the reasoning. Was it to ride the rally or because it was a strong reversal?

  6. You mentioned before the downside of blogging. I don’t get why building an audience first is bad. If anything, it’s a better model than coming up with a product first and pushing it to cold traffic.

Sure the process is slower but your chance of success is much higher. Because once you’ve earned their trust, you can do so many things. Either pushing your product through then. Or other people product to them.

  7. Working as an SDR in tech sales at a great company. An enterprise AE at our bootcamp recommended bouncing between companies to advance faster. Think it’s worth trading the political standing for faster advancement?

Thanks for all your great content! Appreciate you guys.

    1. No because you shouldn’t care about the company. You should maximize earnings with minimal work through office politics and efficient work. Then build your real dreams (a business).

Not sure why people keep asking redundant questions. Careers will never ever matter (never ever)… Never.

      1. Yeah I get that, reason I ask is in the interest of my business. Higher earnings (as an inside account executive) = more capital to invest in my e-commerce business while also advancing my knowledge of sales and developing closing skills, right now I’m just doing 80% cold outreach and booking appointments (OTE $85k – $100k).

If I can become an AE 6 – 12 months faster by switching companies, do you think it’s still better to stay at my current gig as an SDR and focus all my extra time on e-comm?

  8. What are your May 2020 thoughts on the first ever Bitcoin Fund, stock QBTC?

Would the proposed tax advantages of trading Bitcoin through stock, be better than holding bitcoin satoshis?

And disadvantages to QBTC that I may be not considering?

  9. Currently working at a digital agency in LA, running facebook + snapchat ads for a specific vertical.

I’m launching my own company in the same space (selling it everyday already know the market).

What are the steps to having my own product created, like sourcing and manufacturing?

  10. 1) I am 27 based in a financial hub in Asia, a sales engineer with an average fixed salary in my area and am looking for more upside potential. I am interested in investing and finance and have passed CFA I last year. Getting a proper finance job with no relevant experience is tough this time. Is transiting to a wealth management advisor role now a sensible move? I plan to learn the financial product as much as possible to build up my branding in this field

    2) Based on the first question, do you think moving into the asset management role is a sensible exit option? Since I have no relevant experience, I might start at the bottom of totem pole for a year or two (refer to https://wallstreetplayboys.com/navigating-wall-street/)

    3) What do you think the recent recession is going to affect the real estate market in Asia? I knew that you recommended better rent if not staying in the same location for more than 10 years. But the capital gain of real estate in Asia has been a good investment. Do you think it’s real growth or a bubble like Japan in the late-80s?

    1. 1) no you are wasting your time
      2) No. Again its a declining space, so go into the only career paths we mentioned otherwise optimize cash flows and try to go into RE or online business creation
      3) Terribly, unclear how it works in each Geo but should be ugly in 6-12 months. Then prices will be interesting

      1. 1) Can you please elaborate more on that? My thought process is the WMA role is pure sales with unlimited upside potential similar to RE agent (largely commission-based), whereas my current role as sales engineer is stable but with low fixed total compensation (~USD 40k pretax)

2 and 3) I live in the most expensive city in the world in terms of RE… and no one knows if it’s gonna be a bubble or keep going (uptrends since 2003). For now the more conservative way I can think of is to invest in REITs. Anything I missed here?

      2. Only change if it’s going to make you more money. If that’s the case then sure. The point is that making $60K instead of $50K or whatever isn’t going to change your life.

Based on your response sounds like you already decided and just want someone to reassure taking the CFA will work out. So… We stated it wont make a difference but we’re sure others will disagree.

If you want to go to finance go ahead, it’s a dying industry though and worthless outside of M&A now

The caveat here is “asia might be different” we doubt it but it could be true. Talk to someone out there

REITs make absolutely no sense, you get no way to have forced returns. No responsibility = lowers return profile…

Our responses are blunt but you seem to think like legacy finance people. REITs, find ways to get into old finance jobs that “may reward you”. Those days are long gone, it’s about starting something yourself with forced returns. Perhaps Asia is different but in the USA just no way we would do any of that stuff.

      3. Going to chime in here as I have experience in this

        1. did you basically grow up in mainland China – if you aren’t culture/language fluent then 100% forget it (‘honky’ mandarin isn’t going to cut it)

        2. private banking/wm is ok from all the mainland money but walk into any PWM floor at a top 3 IB. good luck playing that game if you aren’t a asian pretty and female

some recruiters i spoke to pre-covid also mentioned AM headcount is moving out of hk to sg because of uncertainty around the protests though i don’t know if this is still true given recent events

    2. Thank you for your blunt advice. Will fine tune the direction and follow the recommended forced return path.

  11. Bougnt around $100 worth of your ebooks for friends, great stuff.

So I have no degree, tried software sales and it wasnt my strength but I found alot of success with social media marketing and copywriting due to growing my own Instagram to 100k in 2 weeks with high quality followers.

Just moved from Miami to NYC in midtown manhatta and currently getting $20 an hour at the hospital on a 3 month contractut wanting to move into marketing as it is a high ROI skill that will help grow my social media accounts which is my strength and all I care about doing

Would it be dumb to merge into a field into marketing like paid advertising and master FB ads etc…I dont know what other path to take.

Anyone feel free to reach out:
    https://www.linkedin.com/mwlite/in/brentlaclair

Please dont remove my Linkedin link as I am growing my name in the social media space and plan on being a public figure.

    1. Sounds like you found an area to focus. Convert copy writing skills to a business (many ways to do this write the ads for someone who is not doing well = take percent of sales). Many many options

So keep you r day job to keep lights on without stress and focus all effort on *online* sales. Ditch software sales.

  12. Thoughts on moving to NYC right now? Have you left or plan on leaving? I moved to Miami from NYC. Now feel I should move back to NYC and enjoy it while still young. Florida energy, weather, days the same, time moving fast, doesn’t seem to help work or focus. You agree?

  13. Non-US citizen here, living in Asia. What proportion of my assets would you recommend that I hold in USD-denominated currency and assets? I’m currently 50% my own country and HKD, 50% USD.

  14. Currently do not own any cryptocurrency.
Looking to diversify portfolio in case of cryptos hitting home run.

    Buy BTC at $8800?

If not, at what price would you look to enter?

  15. 20m, crypto millionaire. Running a sugar dating (sugar daddy & baby) company now, platform (which is similar to seeking.com) launching in 1-2 months.

However, our revenue model is transaction based instead of subscription (seeking charges $90/month). We earn commissions off dates/trips/allowances arranged through the platform.

We’re thinking of competing in the SEO/SERP realm against larger competitors (which have top rankings), since active marketing through Facebook etc is not allowed for dating websites. I read that you felt SEO was worthless, how else should we acquire users (asides from word of mouth etc).

P.S. Should I go public with the sugar dating platform? Not sure if it will affect my reputation, or my University admissions process in 2 years time.

    1. Why in the world would you care about college hahaha

In that case though then yes go SEO route to avoid killing your reputation. You’re already set so good luck and go for it!

  16. My intelligence lies between sales and synthesis but more synthesis.

I work a basic office admin job at a fintech startup paying $60k but a LOT of free time.

I work closely with the CEO (early 30’s, multi-millionaire and a mentor). He’s promised $70k after I graduate my law degree (in 3 years time) and $150k in the following 5 years.

    Should I:

    1) Go into tech sales (have SDR offer, $115k OTE).
    2) Go into recruiting (due to synthesis strength. Have an internal recruiter offer from Google, $80k + commission, unsure how much yet. Don’t think it will be much).
    3) Stay at current job (learn from CEO, use the free time to scale biz).

    1. Option 1 and scale business. You need to make as much as possible to fund your other ideas. “tons of free time” usually leads to wasted time. You need pressure and something tangible to do

  17. 1) is it worth investing in online real estate investment platforms like Fundrise, Realty Mogul or Origin? As you supported RealtyShares in the past was curious if these had any potential value as part of a portfolio with other investments

    2) Seeing as a business (even on the side) is likely the best way to wealth, is a career worth it if one breaks into the top earner brackets ($750k-$1m+)? Or is it still a case where the effort or hours out weighs payoff and biz is more money regardless as it scales?

    Thanks again.

    1. 1) do not know how it works long-term but think its worth it for diversified portfolio. Never large position
      2) No. Never worth it. The people who do clear $1M (rare) can likely start their own companies and clear a ton of money

  18. This is me giving back because I want to save people my age – 25 – time not a question.

I post here because I actually don’t need this blog’s help in making money but I need it desperately to become better at being social. I competed multiple times in the International Math Olympiad before I could legally vote so as no surprise to anyone – despite my social skills – I make >300k a year, work semi remotely 10-25 hours per week – sometimes as low as 5 hours a week, all while living in a major city where there are ways to spend money (NYC).

So many people ages 21-25 that are making 200-500k seem hell bent on burning their assets in ways that are at best unproductive and at worst lose them all their hard earned money! I don’t see anyone following what is written on this blog so I just want to testify that it all works and that you should follow it.

    1. Stop Daytrading – If anyone could actually make 10% a month consistently there would 1000x as many people with 5M or more in the bank. What a waste.
    2. Stop Buying “Real Estate” – You know literally nothing about real estate unless you are actually using it as your active income source – broker or full time investor. You are not smart enough to ‘house hack’ or ‘fix properties’ and you will get paved by the guys who do this for a living.
    3. ‘Fundrise’, ‘Lending Club’ – All Scams, none of these will earn you money in anyway over boring equities.
    4. ‘I know this industry’ stock buying – Who cares? Even if you 5x 100k… you could have earned an extra 2M or more over the same time horizon by just earning more income. I’ll bet this even applies at 5M+ because you can just buy your way into the company through ownership or executive position.
    5. ‘6%’ vs ‘7%’ vs ‘5%’ in perpetuity – Have a bigger portfolio and you will not care. Spend more time earning money or try to earn more money in a year.
    6. I’m rich so I’m smart enough to XYZ – No you are not, the people with 5M+ don’t waste time on any of the above, why are you – someone with <20% of their assets – somehow an exception?

  19. The fallout you described is real. I am feeling it now but thankfully I do not care. I am going to focus on winning for all time instead of letting others stop me from doing so.
